A Brief History of Winton
In 1743 George II of England granted to George Braxton, Jr. a large section
of Virginia land. A portion of that land was purchased in the mid
1760's by Colonel Joseph Cabell who named his property "Winton" which was
the name of his ancestral home in England. The construction of the
original manor house, a late Georgian two story frame structure, was
completed by Colonel Cabell in 1769.
Sarah Winston Syme Henry, the mother of Patrick Henry, lived
at Winton from 1779 to 1784. She was the first of several of her family
members to be buried within the cemetery which is surrounded by a brick wall
and located adjacent to the golf course approximately 200 yards to the west
of the Manor House.
The ownership of Winton changed several times over the course
of almost two centuries until its purchase in 1967 by Mr. Keene C. Brown. Mr. Brown gave the property to the County of Amherst under the condition
that the property be leased to a corporation and
operated as a private membership club. Winton Country Club was incorporated
in 1967 and continues to operate under a long term lease from Amherst
County.
The original manor house is on the list of national
historical places.
